Winter Family Outing Ideas for Toddlers

When it’s cold outside, make your own warmth! Winter is the season to spend all bundled up with the people you love and create cozy memories that can last a lifetime. Toddlers especially enjoy the festive season because they’re finally old enough to really take everything in and understand what the holidays are about. Here are some fun ideas to make this winter a memorable one!

Watch winter classics – Some things never get old and Home Alone is certainly one of them. Or how about you all cozy together on the couch and watch a family favorite like Frozen. These winter classics are easier to watch than ever since these days they’re all on Netflix and YouTube!

Building a snowman – Watch Frosty the Snowman and then help your toddler build his own snowman (or snow woman)! Most toddlers have a blast playing in the snow and this is a great activity for the entire family. Don’t forget to bring your carrot noses!

Sledding – If your locale has some light hills, this could be quite the thrilling winter event. Get yourself a snow tube or sled and put your arms around your little one and get ready to have the time of your lives!

Holiday shows – The holidays are teeming with entertainment for toddlers! Check your local newspaper or a website like Macaroni Kid for holiday offerings and introduce your child to a little culture and entertainment while raising her festive spirit.

Holiday decorations – Sometimes the most fun entails just a simple walk around the neighborhood. Who doesn’t love to see spectacular light displays? Bundle up your toddler for a stroll and watch the decorations light up his face! And don’t forget the hot cocoa to keep you warm!

Make paper snowflakes – Who isn’t enamored with how making cuts into folded paper results in the most beautiful of paper snowflakes? This activity also stimulates your child’s artistic mind though you might have to guide her a bit at first. Use multi-colored paper for an added visual bonus!

Go ice skating – Take your tot out to his/her first ice skating lesson and it will definitely be a memory they won’t forget! Ice skating can be a lot of fun for the whole family as you can hold hands to keep each other going and hope that no one falls down (although falling down can be part of the fun!). Look for a family friendly rink that serves snacks and hot cocoa and maybe even has arcade games for when you need a break from the ice.

How to Protect your Baby’s Sensitive Skin

It’s no secret that babies have naturally sensitive skin that is very delicate, just like them. It’s easy for baby to develop dry skin, irritation, and rashes if you don’t take care of it like you would with your own skin. Baby’s skin needs even more care and attention because it is so sensitive. Plus, the more you hold and massage baby, the stronger your bond will grow and baby will love the affection and mom or dad’s soothing embrace. Here are some helpful tips for taking care of baby’s sensitive skin:

  1. Use organic and simple products

When it comes to baby’s skin, you want to use very natural and safe skincare and bath products that contain no chemicals, fragrances, or other possibly irritating substances. Bathtime Baby is a luxurious baby skincare line that is safe and gentle, formulated with organic plant and fruit extracts, along with skin nourishing vitamins and antioxidants that will protect and care for your baby's delicate skin.

  1. Wash baby less

There’s no need to bathe your baby every single day – this will just end up drying baby’s skin more. Three times a week is more than enough so that you’re not washing away the natural oils produced by baby’s skin for protection. You also don’t want to aggravate eczema by washing too much.

  1. Test new products first

If you’re using a new bath or skincare item on baby for the first time and you are unsure if baby will have a reaction to it, always test it on a small spot first. You don’t want to risk baby having an allergic reaction to one of the product’s ingredients and developing a rash everywhere so check on that one spot after several hours and if there is no reaction then it is probably safe to use.

  1. Prevent diaper rash

Make sure that baby is properly dried after a bath and check for wet diapers frequently so you can change them before they cause a rash. You can wash baby’s diaper area with a fragrance-free cleanser or just water and avoid using baby wipes that have perfume or alcohol. Then pat baby dry instead of rubbing her dry.

  1. Wash new clothes and towels

If you or a family member has purchased new clothes for baby, always wash them before putting them on. Clothing is often treated with chemicals to give clothing a “new” look, but these chemicals can be harsh on baby’s skin. Try to use natural and eco-friendly laundry detergents with no added fragrance like Rockin’ Green laundry soap.

5 Tips to Create a Safe Nursery for Kids

When a parent is looking to perfect their child’s nursery, it’s not always about cute colors and comfy crib bedding for your child. The fun stuff is necessary to get the full experience of building your baby’s nursery, but keeping safety in mind is the most important aspect. Before your new baby moves in, be sure to rid the nursery of any potential hazards. Here are some tips to keep in mind during this process:

  1. Safe Crib

Making sure you have the perfect crib is a very important part of the nursery because this is where your child will be spending the majority of his/her time. The crib you choose should meet all current government safety standards. The slats should be a safe distance apart to avoid having your child stick their head between them. Also, the corner posts shouldn’t have any added decorative touches or edges that could snag a child’s clothing and lead to strangulation or other injuries.

  1. Toy Safety

The Home Safety Council recommends storing your child’s toys in bins or boxes without lids. If your toy chest has a lid, it should also have a spring-loaded mechanical arm that prevents the lid from falling on your baby’s hand or even trapping him inside.

  1. Cord Caution

The nursery should be arranged in a way that avoids having the crib, playpen, or other low-standing furniture anywhere near the windows of the room. If they’re too close, your child could reach the cords for the window blinds. For older babies, they could even climb their way up to the window and fall through the screen. The use of window guards and cordless window shades are ideal for baby-proofing the nursery from cords.

  1. Cover Outlets

Electrical wall outlets should always have plug protectors covering them. You want to look for the covers that can shield the entirety of the wall unit because curious toddlers can pick out the individual socket protectors. If an electrical cord is necessary to have plugged in, try taping it down well so your child doesn’t stand a chance in getting to that dangerous area.

  1. Avoid Accessories

When it comes to a baby’s crib, the only necessary item should be a tight-fitting bed sheet. Many parents love buying a bunch of cute blankets and toys for their little one, but these all pose suffocation hazards for newborn babies. Toys are fine to use when you’re supervising and playing with your baby, but when it comes time for them to sleep, none of these added accessory items should be used in a crib. It’s tough to be minimalistic with so many adorable baby products but it’s way better to be safe than sorry!

5 Safety Tips for New Parents

When it comes to their child’s safety, a parent will do whatever it takes to protect their little one. It’s a natural instinct that kicks in as soon as you bring your baby home from the hospital. Parents have an overwhelming need to protect baby and keep her feeling safe and loved. This is why many parents take the first step of babyproofing the home as soon as they find out they are expecting. There are several things you can do as a parent to keep your home free of hazards and ensure your child’s safety.

  1. Practice swaddling

You may not think of swaddling as something that can harm baby, but it can if you do not know how to swaddle properly. Make sure to follow the nurse’s instructions at the hospital and do not swaddle baby too tightly as this can lead to hip dysplasia. It’s even better to purchase a zip-up swaddle that takes the guesswork out of swaddling, like the Woombie.

  1. Close off stairs

You never want your baby crawling anywhere near a staircase out of fear they will fall down. Close off access to any stairs in the house or “forbidden areas” like an office or garage with a baby safety gate that is easy to install. Make sure it is installed properly so there is no way for it to fall on baby.

  1. Use eco-friendly products

Several products out there from clothing to shampoo and body lotion contain harsh chemicals that are harmful to baby (and yes, even those products that are made just for kids.) When shopping, make sure to read the label on everything and look for eco-friendly/organic brands. You want products that say they are non-toxic and contain no BPAs, phthalates, or parabens. Bathtime Baby & Kids is a line of natural baby skincare formulated with plant and fruit extracts to protect baby’s skin.

  1. Place baby on her back to sleep

It is recommended that baby always be placed on her back to sleep to help reduce the risk of SIDS. This prevents baby from rebreathing her own exhaled breath. A new study also advises that parents sleep in the same room as baby for her first year. However, parents should not share the same bed with baby.

  1. Secure cabinets

Use childproof latches for cabinets and drawers around your house, and especially in the kitchen. It’s also a good idea to move cleaning products and medicines to high cabinets that are hard to reach. Unplug your appliances and keep the cords tied up. As your child gets older he can pull on loose cords and they become a strangulation hazard.

8 Ways You Can Teach Your Kids to “Be Green”

how to teach kids to be greenAs our resources diminish and our planet feels the strain of a burdensome population, it’s important now more than ever that we “go green.” Going green means adopting a lifestyle that minimizes our impact on the planet. To truly go green, we have to get our families involved. Here’s how you can help your kids go green.

1. Be honest, but positive

Protecting the environment is important, but don’t dwell on the subject with your kids and make them afraid. Let them know that some animals are endangered and in some places the air is tough to breathe, but also tell them that the problem is fixable if we all pitch in.

2. Make recycling easy

Many people fail to recycle because it’s not convenient. But it’s easy to make it so. Set up the proper receptacle bins for glass, cans, and paper. When it’s time to get rid of something, ask your kids, “Should we reuse this, donate it to someone else, or throw it away?”

3. Spend time with nature

By spending more time outside enjoying our Earth, your children will develop an appreciation for it. This appreciation will spur them to work to protect our home.

4. Teach them how to save energy

One of the best ways we can all impact the environment is by using less energy. Producing electricity is one the biggest ways we pollute our environment and use up our resources. By using less, we have it for longer. Encourage them to use electronics less and always turn off the lights.

5. Use green products at home

If you use products that are designed to be green and healthy, your kids will grow up thinking that lifestyle is normal. Opt for cleaning supplies, natural and organic bath products, personal care products, reusable bags and containers, etc.

6. Use the car less

We rarely think about how we’re impacting the environment when we get in our car, but these are BIG wastes of fossil fuels. Wherever possible, walk or ride your bicycles.

7. Start a family garden

We can appreciate what we get from the Earth by learning about how it gives. Start a family garden. Choose some easy vegetables at first, like tomatoes and herbs. Use those ingredients in your kitchen to everyone feels the benefit of their work.

8. Start a compost bin

There’s so much junk in landfills that the organic stuff has a hard time breaking down. Instead of throwing your food scraps in with the trash, start a compost bin your back yard. Along with your garden, this will teach kids how the Earth recycles its own.

Do you have a green family? What steps do you take?

5 Educational Games to Play With Your Baby

educational baby gamesFun baby games that can boost your child's skills and development are a perfect way for some enjoyment. They don't even need to be complicated and if your child is very young, they shouldn't be. You may even find that many of the best games you can play with your child to help him/her learn about the world around them; which you probably already do for them. Here are some educational games for your child:

1. Peek-a-Boo

Playing peek-a-boo may be the simplest of games, but for a young child it works wonders! Until babies are around 9 months old, they don't realize that you're still there when your face is covered. So your child will be fascinated by your disappearing and reappearing act. This baby game may even help your child become more comfortable in the world when she realizes that you'll come back even when you "go away."

2. Monkey See, Monkey Do

Whether you realize it or not, you’re constantly reading your child’s signals throughout the day. Why not incorporate this into a game for them! Let your baby take the lead and try imitating some of their movements and sounds. This will help your baby develop a foundation for conversation skills. Also, when baby smiles, smile back. This will help your baby develop the sense that he/she realizes you're both having fun and enjoying each other’s company.

3. Patty Cake

This well-known clapping game may seem silly, but it's a great way to help your baby develop a number of important skills. The rhythm and repetitiveness of the tune will help baby develop language skills. As your child gets older, he'll probably try to imitate the movements you're making with your hands, which will help him develop his large motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Patty cake is a simple game with more benefits than you would think.

4. Rhyming Games

Babies love to listen to the voices of people they know, and they're also intrigued by repetitive sounds. Give your baby the opportunity to hear both by regularly saying nursery rhymes or other kid-friendly rhyming games. You can have rhyme time anytime -- in the bath, during snuggle time, or when you're riding in the car. These are all perfect opportunities to entertain baby and boost language skills.

5. Sing-Along

Babies love a lot of different music, but especially soothing and rhythmic sounds. Even if you don't have the best voice, baby will love for you to sing to him and it will help you deepen the parent-child bond. Additionally, songs don't even need to be "real" songs to make for a development boosting game – make something fun for them!

6 Ways to Live a More Natural Lifestyle

Ways to Live a More Natural LifestyleWe’re bombarded every day with toxic, synthetic, and chemical-laden products. From our food to our shampoo to our very lifestyles, we’ve become less natural and more… manufactured. Here are some ways you and your kids can adopt a more natural lifestyle.

1. Cook from scratch

I know how it easy is to pick up something pre-made at the supermarket. And those boxed means are so convenient after a long day at work. But these food items are filled with chemical preservatives, fillers, and an unnecessary amount of sugar (for taste). Cooking from raw ingredients is always the healthiest.

2. Reduce your waste

The first part of the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle mantra is the one people forget about the most. Reducing what you use and throw away is the most effective way to live naturally and diminish your impact on the environment. You can buy in bulk to reduce the packaging you chuck. You can stop using disposable items. Most importantly, you can refurbish and reuse things you already own. When you’re done with items, donate them instead of throwing them out.

3. Switch to eco-friendly products

It’s simpler than you think to swap your chemical-laden products out with natural, sustainable alternatives. They’re available right alongside the traditional products in your favorite stores. Cleaning products, clothing and personal care products (like our eco-friendly baby safe bath time products for kids and babies) are the most important because they come in direct contact our skin.

4. Exercise more often

Exercise doesn’t just make us look great. It also improves our overall health, which means fewer visits to the doctor. It also means you have to take less medication. (Of course, you should take medication if you need it, but it’s best to prevent the need it in the first place.)

5. Opt for natural remedies

Many of our ailments can be remedied with natural solutions before we reach for the pill bottle. A spoonful of honey can soothe a sore throat. A neti pot can soothe or even cure some sinus issues. Colds, flus, and fevers often only require fluids and sleep to overcome. (Disclaimer: always err on the side of safety and see a doctor if something is wrong.)

6. Start a garden

Buying organic produce is a good start, but even those items take some energy to transport and keep cool at the store. A garden is the most natural way to feed yourself. Start with something easy like tomatoes, then work your way up to harder-to-grow vegetables and even fruit trees!

How do you live naturally?
